If you have a small child then there is a chance starting a mommy blog has entered your mind at one point or another. We see them all over, and a lot of them have a lot of followers.
Why are they so popular? I have a theory. The though of being a new parent is frightening, and with new moms to be coming to light every day, they are all looking for tips, information and resources online.
If they encounter a mommy blog with a “mom” that has a personality or story they connect with they will tend to follow their journey. It’s for reassurance and just to “see how it’s done.” They want to live the fabulous life they see online!
There are mommy blogs for everyone. The majority of them are just done for fun, but some are serious business, earning six-figures or more. If you are tossing around the idea of starting your own mommy blog then here are some suggestions to consider.
Document Your Journey
A successful mommy blog leaves nothing to the imagination. The entire journey is documented, and the most popular blogs are keeping a daily journal.
The reasons moms follow these blogs is to connect with other moms going through the same exact things. So, by blogging everything you are going to appeal to a wide range of moms, as well as get them sucked in and wanting to follow along.
Be Active on Social Media
Social media is going to be your number one promotional tool and the easiest way to drive traffic to your blog. Make sure you have your social profiles displayed on your blog and at the end of each blog post encourage the readers to follow you.
This gives you an audience at the tips of your fingers at all times. For example when you post a new blog you can do an Instagram Story post with a “swipe up” that pushes them right to the newest blog, and then you can share it on Twitter and Facebook, driving traffic from those social networks as well.
Outsource Technical Work
The more time you have to blog, the quicker you can scale your content publishing and also make sure that you remain consistent. Things like designing post images and making technical changes are best outsourced.
You will learn that outsourcing is your new best friend once you give it a shot. You will also find that the cost is minimal. You can get things done inexpensively. More importantly it allows you to only have to worry about blogging.
Be Consistent
Being consistent is the most important part of a successful mommy blog. Readers are following along because they want to go along for the ride. If you blog for a month every day then disappear for two weeks that audience is going to disconnect, find another blog to read, and forget about you.
If you are going to start a blog you have to be dedicated and understand that without consistency you will fail.
Come Up with Creative Monetization Strategies
There are a few ways you can monetize your blog, but remember that this should be something you look into after you are established and have strong traffic numbers.
- Google Adsense: You place ad units on your blog and you are compensated based on page views and ad-clicks. It can help you ear a little bit but your visitors will hate them (we don’t use AdSense on this blog because we don’t want to annoy our readers with ads).
- Affiliate Offers: Using affiliate links from either Amazon or other programs, you are compensated (either a percent of flat fee per sale) anytime someone clicks your link and makes a purchase.
- Your Own Product: This is what a lot of the big successful blogs do. They create something they know their readers will love and figure out a way to monetize by offering their own product or service.
