Decking material comparisons are almost always framed around warranty length and initial cost, which are the two numbers easiest to obtain and among the least predictive of how a deck will actually be doing in twenty years.

A more useful comparison asks a different question: what does each material do as it ages, and what does it need in order to keep doing it? The answers differ more than the marketing suggests, and in a wet marine climate they differ more still.

Three Materials, Three Failure Modes

Composite decking is a wood-flour and polymer mixture. It does not rot, because the wood content is encapsulated. What it does instead is fade, scratch, and in older uncapped products, stain and grow surface mold in shaded damp conditions. Modern capped composites resist all of this considerably better than early generations did, which is why composite’s reputation lags its current performance.

Cedar contains natural extractives that resist decay. It is the traditional choice in the Pacific Northwest for exactly that reason. It weathers to gray if left alone, and it will last a long time in that state, but it softens at the surface, it checks, and around fasteners it wears. Its failure is gradual and cosmetic long before it is structural.

Pressure-treated lumber is chemically preserved against rot. It is the cheapest option and the most dimensionally unstable: it warps, cups and splits as it dries, and the rate depends heavily on how wet it was when installed. Its failure mode is distortion rather than decay.

The Comparison Nobody Completes

Purchase price is where material comparisons start and usually where they stop. The number that decides the actual cost over the life of the deck is maintenance, and it is left out because it is a stream of small costs rather than one large one.

Cedar and treated lumber need periodic cleaning and refinishing to hold their appearance. How periodic depends on exposure, but in a damp climate with limited summer drying it is a recurring commitment measured in years, not decades. Skipping it does not destroy the deck. It changes what it looks like, and eventually the surface condition.

Composite needs washing. That is close to the whole list. It is not maintenance-free, which is a claim that has caused a lot of disappointment, but the gap between its upkeep and timber’s is real and it compounds.

Over a twenty-year horizon the initial price difference narrows considerably, and for some owners it reverses. The honest framing is that composite buys down future labor with present money, and whether that is a good trade depends on how much the owner values a free weekend.

What Neither Material Fixes

Here is the point that gets lost in every decking comparison, and it is the one that matters most in this region.

A deck surface can outlast the framing beneath it. The boards are the visible part and the part being compared. The joists, beams, posts and ledger underneath are doing the structural work, and they are usually pressure-treated lumber regardless of what the surface is.

So a homeowner who selects a fifty-year composite surface has not bought a fifty-year deck. They have bought a fifty-year surface sitting on framing whose life is determined by drainage, flashing and hardware.

Marine climates keep timber damp for extended periods. Western Washington does not have long dry spells in which wet framing dries out. Water that gets into a joint tends to stay there, and the joints that trap water are where framing fails.

The consequence is that the durability decision on a deck here is made in the framing details, not at the material counter. Gapping that lets water through rather than pooling it, flashing at the ledger and over beams, hardware rated for wet service and for contact with treated lumber, and joist tape over the tops of joists where fasteners penetrate. Those decisions cost a small fraction of the material budget and they determine whether the structure reaches the surface material’s warranty at all.

Fasteners Are a Material Choice Too

Composite decking is frequently installed with hidden fastener systems that clip into a groove in the board edge. They look better and they avoid face screws in a surface that shows every hole.

They also change two things. Hidden systems generally require a specific joist spacing and they can complicate replacing a single damaged board later, since the clips run in sequence. Neither is a reason to avoid them, but both are worth knowing at specification rather than discovering during a repair.

On timber decks the relevant fastener question is corrosion. Modern preservative treatments are more corrosive to metal than older formulations were, which is why hardware and fasteners rated for contact with treated lumber are not an upsell. Ordinary hardware in contact with treated framing in a wet climate corrodes, and corroded connectors at a ledger or a beam are a structural problem rather than a cosmetic one.

The Local Detail

Newcastle is in King County, on the east side of Lake Washington, in terrain that is wooded and frequently sloped. Two regional conditions shape decking performance here more than the material comparison does.

Shade is the first. A deck under mature conifers gets limited direct sun, stays damp longer after rain, and accumulates needle and leaf debris in the gaps between boards. Organic debris sitting in a gap holds moisture against the board edges and against the joist below, which is where both timber decay and composite surface growth begin. On a shaded lot, the drainage gap and a habit of clearing it matter more than which board was chosen.

Slope is the second. Hillside lots produce elevated decks, and elevation raises the stakes on everything structural: taller posts, larger beam spans, guardrail loads that genuinely matter, and footings bearing on ground that may have been cut or filled.

Matching the Material to the Site

The right choice varies by exposure more than by budget, and the same deck in two positions on one property can warrant two different answers.

The last row is worth stating plainly. The case for composite is a life-cycle case, and it only pays for an owner who will be there long enough to collect it. On a property being sold in a few years, the premium buys an appearance advantage rather than an economic one.

What the Standard Advice Misses

Material comparisons are written as though the decision were a consumer purchase, and they compare warranty terms as if warranties were equivalent. Warranties cover material defects rather than installation. A composite warranty against fade and stain does not respond to a board that failed because it was fastened wrongly or because water was trapped against it, and installation is the more common cause of an unhappy deck than material defect.

The second omission is climate specificity. Advice written for a national audience averages a dry Southwest with a wet Northwest, and the resulting recommendations are unhelpful in both. Cedar performs differently here from how it performs in Arizona, and so does uncapped composite in shade.

The third is that the comparison excludes the structure. A twenty-five year decking board on framing that was not detailed for drainage is a mismatched specification, and the mismatch is invisible until the deck feels soft underfoot and the cause turns out to be underneath rather than on top.

The Summary

Each material fails differently: composite fades and scratches, cedar softens and checks, treated lumber warps. None of them rot on the surface in a way that decides the deck’s life.

Maintenance is the number missing from most comparisons, and over twenty years it narrows or reverses the purchase-price gap.

The framing underneath usually decides how long the whole assembly lasts, particularly in a marine climate where wet joints do not dry out. Drainage detailing, flashing and wet-rated hardware cost little and determine whether the surface material ever reaches its warranty.
